Brazil holds second place in world production of dicalcium phosphate, which represents the main source of phosphorus for complementing the mineral salt that makes up the daily feed for cattle, hogs and fowls. Considering the fact that the increase in consumption of phosphates due to the increased annual consumption of meat by the world population, developmen

Even though the development and use by Blood Banks in Brazil of ELISAs tests of third and fourth generation for the detection of anti-HCV with higher sensitivity in relation to the tests of second generation, the specificity of those tests still remains below of the desired one. Therefore, the serological screening for hepatitis C using enzyme immunoassays c

Direct contact rotary kilns are widely used equipments with many industrial applications. The evaluation of the residence-time of the particles on these reactors is fundamental in the development of controlled and optimized systems. In the present work, a technique to measure the residence-time distribution (RTD) was developed in a rotary kiln of 5,45m long

The ethanol is one of the most well-known and diffused fuels sources in nowadays, therefore the domain of its technology has a great importance to the producer countries. Beyond it is in general, lesser expensive than the major part of the petrochemical fuels, the ethanol has its origin in the renewable sources that becomes Brazil in a world power on its pro

29. Evaluation of the stock and isotopic composition of carbon in the soil of Acre. / Avaliação do estoque e composição isotópica do carbono do solo no Acre.
The State of Acre is located in the extreme west of Brazil, occupying an area that had great geological influence from the mountain chain of Andes. The soils present pedologic characteristics very different from the ones found in the remaining of Brazilian Amazon, prevailing Inceptisols, Alfisols, and Ultisols, generally eutrophic, young and little weathered

30. Use of tower reactors for continuous ethanol production
The purpose of this work was to develop a continuous fermentation system operating with a tower reactor using some flocculent yeast strains isolated from an industrial process. The strain was an used in the trial of the proposed system, composed of two serial glass tower reactor. The effects of the following variables were studied on the yield and productivi

32. Schizophrenia: do men and women suffer from the same disease?
This article reviews the literature on normal brain development and behavioural development in men and women as well as on aetiological risk factors for schizophrenia, such as pre-, peri- and postnatal complications. The male-female comparisons of age and type of onset, symptomatology, course and outcome were based on a population-based sample of 232 first i

33. Recent extensions of the residence time distribution concept: unsteady state conditions and hydrodynamic model developments
Two recent extensions of the residence time distribution concept are developed. The first one concerns the use of this method under transient conditions, a concept theoretically treated but rarely confirm by relevant experiments. In the present work, two experimental set-ups have been used to verify some limits of the concept. The second extension is devoted

34. IMMOBILIZED Saccharomyces cerevisiae AND Leuconostoc oenus FOR ALCOHOLIC AND MALOLACTIC FERMENTATION IN CONTINUOUS WINE MAKING
The use of sugarcane stalks to immobilize microorganisms by adsorption in continuous fermentation was investigated. The canes were peeled and cut horizontally and transversally into pieces 2 × 1 × 1 cm3. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to verify the external and internal structure of the sugarcane stalk support prior to cell immobilization.

The culture conditions used in most of the works published on alcoholic fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed to be different from those used in brazilian destilleries. Besides this, many works were carried out on isothermic conditions so that the temperature effect on yield and productivity couldn t have been verified. In this work the main obje

36. The schooling of children of immigrants: Contextual effects on the educational attainment of the second generation
We supplement earlier published findings on the academic achievement of the immigrant second generation with an analysis of school contextual effects based on the same large data set used by the best-known prior analyses, the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study. A hierarchical model of contextual and individual-level effects on academic achievement and
