RESUMO

The association between overweight in children, adolescents and adults in the city ofRio de Janeiro, Brazil, was investigated considering the influence of socio-economic and demographic conditions. A residence-based two-stage random sample was used. Data was obtained by means of interviews and physical examinations. The sample comprised all children and adolescents six to nineteen years and adults above twenty years. The thesis was divided in three studies: the first concerned the adult population above twenty years. For the nutritional classification, Body Mass lndex (BM!) was used, overweight being defmed by the cutting point ofBMI ~ 25 Kglm2; for the waist - hip ratio (WRQ) the cutting point ofwas ~ 0.95 (men) and ~ 0.80 (women). Variables studied were alimentary consumption (energy, cholesterol, fat and saturated fat), socio-economic and lifestyle variables. Two models of logistic regression were developed for the variables BMI and WHRused as dependent variables. The overweight prevalence found for BMI was 45% for both sexes and 40% in relation to WRQ (excess of central fat). For the BMI modelo the retained variables were age, schooling, smoking; for WRQ, age, schooling, occupation and sexoln the second article the studied population was children from six to eleven years. In the evaluation of the nutritional state the BMI was used, (subscapular and triceps skinfolds). Overweight and risk of overweight prevalence was 37,8% for girls and 36,4% for boys. Three regression models were developed with BMI and skinfolds as dependent variables. For BMI the variables retained in the model were age and number of persons in a residence. For the triceps skinfold they were age, sex and residence location. The third article concerned the relationship between the parents nutritional state and the children s overweight, and the sample comprised children and adolescents six to nineteen years and their respective parents. The overweight prevalence found for males was 26,9% and for females 20,7%. Besides the variables mother s BMI and the children s age, sex and number of people in the house were detected as predictors of the children s overweight. ln the studied population, in the three studies, it was found a very high overweight prevalence and an association between the maternal overweight and the children s nutritional state, suggesting the need to create prevention strategies for obesity, involving the family nucleus, seeking to prevent future problems as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, among other diseases
