25. Evaluation of crystal violet decolorization assay for minimal inhibitory concentration detection of primary antituberculosis drugs against Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates
In this study we evaluated the crystal violet decolorization assay (CVDA) for detection of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antituberculosis drugs. 53 isolates were tested in this study and 13 of them were multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates. The antibiotics concentrations were 2-0.06 mg/L for isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) and were 16-0.25 mg/

26. Neurobrucellosis and venous sinus thrombosis: an uncommon association
Abstract: Brucellosis is a commonly diagnosed zoonosis and neurological involvement is rare. A 30-year-old woman presented with a pulsatile headache that was exacerbated by the Valsalva maneuver and refractory to analgesic therapy. The patient also had nausea, cough, and coryza that evolved over 7 days. The neurological examination was unremarkable. Thrombos

27. Effects of the encapsulation of usnic acid into liposomes and interactions with antituberculous agents against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis clinical isolates
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has acquired resistance and consequently the antibiotic therapeutic options available against this microorganism are limited. In this scenario, the use of usnic acid (UA), a natural compound, encapsulated into liposomes is proposed as a new approach in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) therapy. Thus the aim of this st

28. Isoniazid and rifampin drug susceptibility testing: application of 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride assay and microscopic-observation drug-susceptibility assay directly on Ziehl-Neelsen smear positive sputum specimens
Abstract The current study was aimed to evaluate the performance of direct 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride assay and direct microscopic observation drug susceptibility assay with indirect Löwenstein-Jensen proportion method directly on Ziehl-Neelsen smear positive sputum specimens. Methods Direct acid fast bacilli smear positive sputum specimens (n =

29. SISTEMAS ALTERNATIVOS DE CALIBRAÇÃO PARA DETERMINAÇÃO ESPECTROFOTOMÉTRICA SIMULTÂNEA DE ESPÉCIES COM INTERFERÊNCIA ESPECTRAL
Two simple and efficient procedures have been developed for the rapid simultaneous determination of compounds with mutual spectral interference (rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH)). The first method was based on the UV–Vis spectral signal (190–600 nm) of synthetic RIF and INH aqueous solutions, whereas the second method involved the visible spectral si

30. Evaluation of four colourimetric susceptibility tests for the rapid detection of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates
The purpose of this study is to evaluate four rapid colourimetric methods, including the resazurin microtitre assay (REMA), malachite green decolourisation assay (MGDA), microplate nitrate reductase assay (MNRA) and crystal violet decolourisation assay (CVDA), for the rapid detection of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. Fifty Mycobacterium tuberculosis

31. Molecular profiling of drug resistant isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil
Drug resistance is a global threat and one of the main contributing factors to tuberculosis (TB) outbreaks. The goal of this study was to analyse the molecular profile of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Fifty-three MDR Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates were analysed by spoligotyping and a partial

32. Different resistance patterns of reference and field strains of Brucella abortus
The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of the B. abortus reference strains and field isolates on media containing different inhibitor agents. Reference strains were seeded on tryptose agar containing: i-erythritol (1.0 mg/mL), fuchsin (20 μg/mL and 80 μg/mL), thionin (2.5 μg/mL and 10 μg/mL), rifampicin (200 μg/mL) and safranin O (200 μg/mL).

33. Cutaneous tuberculosis with nonreactive PPD skin test: a diagnostic challenge
The authors report a case of cutaneous tuberculosis in a 63-year-old female patient, who had an infiltrated, erythematous-ferruginous plaque of indurated aspect on her right leg and a nonreactive PPD skin test. Diagnosis was made by tissue culture and PCR of skin biopsy material. The treatment was p

34. Multivariate Control Charts for Simultaneous Quality Monitoring of Isoniazid and Rifampicin in a Pharmaceutical Formulation Using a Portable Near Infrared Spectrometer

35. Gastric-resistant isoniazid pellets reduced degradation of rifampicin in acidic medium

36. Determination of the activity of standard anti-tuberculosis drugs against intramacrophage Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in vitro: MGIT 960 as a viable alternative for BACTEC 460
BACTEC 460 has now been phased out, so the search for an alternative is imperative. We have determined the activity of standard anti-tuberculosis drugs against intramacrophage Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in vitro, by using BACTEC 460 and MGIT 960 methods. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and streptomycin against intr
