32. O feroz mosquito africano no Brasil: o Anopheles gambiae entre o silêncio e a sua erradicação (1930-1940)
(Prêmio Oswaldo Cruz de Teses 2017) Integrante da coleção História e Saúde da Editora Fiocruz, o livro desenvolve uma narrativa histórica de chegada, alastramento e erradicação do Anopheles gambiae, mosquito que teve provável origem em Dacar, capital do Senegal, e chegou ao Brasil pelo Rio Grande do Norte. O vetor causou uma epidemia de malária sem precedentes no Brasil no início dos anos 1930 e, após esforços cooperativos entre o governo brasileiro de Getúlio Vargas e a Fundação Rockefeller, foi erradicado em 1940. Pesquisador da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, o autor Gabriel Lopes aborda, ao longo de quatro capítulos, condicionantes políticas, sociais e ecológicas que permitiram que o mosquito se espalhasse pelo Nordeste do país, incluindo questões como o ritmo das chuvas e os períodos de seca. A obra também apresenta notas, referências e imagens de acervo ligadas ao período de alastramento e combate ao Anopheles gambiae.
