A 56-yr-old black woman with absence of the eighth component of complement and a disease compatible with systemic lupus erythematosus is described. Her disease is characterized by the presence of photosensitive “malar” rash, alopecia, polyarthritis, and nephrotic syndrome.

47. Ocular myasthenia gravis after D-penicillamine administration.
A 68-year-old black woman who was put on D-penicillamine therapy (250-500 mg per day, total dose 15 g) for rheumatoid arthritis developed ocular myasthenia gravis. Two weeks after she discontinued D-penicillamine her signs and symptoms cleared with no other treatment. Review of previous cases and possible immunological mechanisms are discussed.

48. Hepatotoxicity caused by the combined action of isoniazid and rifampicin.
A 35 year old black Somalian woman with miliary tuberculosis developed hepatotoxicity after a few days of treatment with isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol.
