RESUMO

This dissertation is a study on workers? recreational associations and friendly societies in Campinas in the period between 1906 and 1930. The main goal is to investigate how these associations worked, the role they played in mobilizing workers, the social spaces they built, and the ways they allowed workers to negotiate improvements in their lives. The everyday administrative work in these associations reveals how workers established their identities and the mechanisms they used to participate in political debates. It is important to investigate the history of these workers organizations, especially for labor history, since it would help to better understand how workers articulated, the diversity of social actions they took part in, and how they cooperated to reach specific goals.
