RESUMO

This descriptive, exploratory and comparative research aimed at delineating a synoptic chart of school violence in two schools, with different characteristics, both linked to the teaching system of the D.F. (Federal District). It also analysed and discussed the supervisor s role in relation to the problem of violence. Pertinent literature has stressed concepts about everyday manifestations of violence in the society and in schools, bringing up some considerations about educational administration in Brazil and the administrationâs role. Concepts of conflicts and other ambiguities, which involve the theme of "school violence", have been discussed. The results show that violent manifestations are very similar at both schools regardless of the fact that they are very different, one belonging to public and the other to the private system. The most frequent forms of violence detected in both environments were verbal offenses and physical bullying, both of them not being very explicit, and difficult to identify in the pedagogical routine. Teachers and directors showed very little competence in dealing with school violence, and lack of an efficient communication was the characteristic most evident in the relation between those who took part in this work. As to the role of the administrator, it became clear his importance in actions dealing with school violence, he being the main element which made viable and facilitated meaningful strategies in dealing with and preventing violence. Teachers and students made it clear that most frequent actions of supervising to deal with violence have been those of coercitive and punitive character, as well as a rigid discipline control. Among the actions of administration, expected by teachers and students, to deal with the problem, the search for dialogue and the access to pertinent informations about "violence" have been stressed.
