RESUMO

This work investigates the teaching possibilities of the material Desenho Animado Ambiental (DAA: Environmental Cartoon) and its generator themes, as a methodological strategy for Environmental Education. DAA is a DVD in which the main character, Menino Caranguejo (Crab Boy) (http://www.caranguejo.com), presents environmental concepts and develops values which promote environmental awareness. The material consists of seven cartoons on environmental themes, and was used with teachers from two schools in the city of Joinville. The composition and making-off of each of the seven episodes (Urban Pollution, Deforestation, Illegal Hunting, Water, Indigenous People, Urbanization and Consumption) deal with a separate environmental theme, as generator themes (inspired on the texts of Paulo Freire and other authors who defend the critical approach to Environmental Education). The themes were developed to help the teacher in his or her pedagogical practice, viewing this individual as an agent for the insertion of environmental ideals in the school curriculum. The research was of the descriptive, qualitative type. In the educational design, the DAA episodes of the DVD show environmental concepts, attitudes and values, represented by the actions of the Menino Caranguejo. The slides of each episode present images of the cartoons, highlighting their didactic content, such as problem situations and basic environmental concepts, and also ethical principles and values, such as the social identification of the viewers of the DVD with the reality of their local socio-environmental problems; respect for life, biodiversity, and the natural environment as a common asset and heritage, the practice of citizenship as political participation, and the development of joint responsibility for the environment, among others. To determine the level of articulation and interaction of the environmental contents of the generator themes dealt with in the DVD, the recognition and development of attitudes, habits and values, and the acceptance of the activities by the teachers and their students, a structured interview was used, which was applied to six teachers of two schools. The teachers recognized the importance of working with the environmental concepts, actions and values shown in the DAA cartoons. They assumed the role of mediators of learning, through the acquisition and reconstruction of knowledge and environmental concepts. These include curiosity, exploration, adventure, creativity, problem solving, dialogicity and the acquisition of new values, and decision-making through personal observation, questioning and reflections that lead to a transformation of the reality and a recognition and/or minimization of environmental problems. The material proved to be an appropriate strategy for inserting the environmental dimension and as a tool for helping the teacher in debates and reflection about the local environmental themes dealt with in the DVD. Some of the actions carried out by the teachers and their students, after using the DAA, were: discussions, debates and reflection about local environmental themes, applying them to their own lives
