RESUMO

The digital exclusion has been measured by an index that is coming to join the several other social indexes of poverty in Brazil. The digitally excluded is a citizen who does not have access to a computer or does not have knowledge to use the technology. Nowadays we have already numbers that measure the digital exclusion in the world. In Brazil only 12,6% of the population have access to a computer in their home and 8,31 % have access to the Internet. Again we can see a gap that is being built between people who have opportunities and others who do not have them. The information era has arrived and someone who does not have technological knowledge will be one more excluded of our society. With this reality in mind how to share the access to technology and consequently to the information for all people? We need to motivate this discussion because it is important to create alternatives and creative ways to fight against this problem. Together in this issue is a discussion about software license. How to share technology if a software license is so expensive? W ould the free software be a solution? In this work we compare the usability of 2 operational systems: Windows 98 and Conectiva Linux 7.0 in a course about basic informatics. The subjects who took part in the study are part of socially excluded people. The two systems were selected according to technical characteristics of speed because the computers of popular schools of informatics are usually old, with little capacity ofprocessing and memory. The goal of this study was to evaluate the usability of the operational systems and to identify possibilities of improvement to facilitate the learning of informatics to the excIuded people. Besides the work with the students in a class we analyzed the installation of 4 Linux operational systems and Windows 98 to identify an installation adequate to the informatics schools, where most of the volunteer teachers are not experts in computing. We could identify that the interfaces of the Linux operational systems need more development to attend the requirements of the studied context. Although Linux is not in the same usability leveI of Windows, there are versions that can be used to do the same activities that Windows 98 supports today. Two examples ofLinux operational systems that we analyzed and can be implemented to the learning of basic informatics in the popular informatics school are the Conectiva Linux 7.0 and the Kurumin 1.4
