RESUMO

In this work it is presented a hierarchical plate finite element formulation based on the p-approximation concept. Beginning with the isoparametric 8-node Serendipity family element with consistent integration and employing successive hierarchical refinements, it is achieved an element which is equally effective for thin as well as moderately thick plates. The hierarchical nature of the formulation yields a computationally efficient system at the element leveI as well as assembly and solution leveI. Computational effort spent in lower p-Ievel elements need not be repeated when computations are performed in higher p-Ievels. The present formulation permits adaptive refinements, since it can use different polynomial expansions at different sides and elements, creating new degrees of freedom, associated to the hierarchical parameters, when required by the errors involved in the analysis. It is made, at last, a discussion about hierarchical approximation when employing distorted elements (circular plates and shells) showing, in the local space, the new polynomial expansions, necessary for refinements in the cartesian space
