RESUMO

This dissertation aims to discuss the use of translating in language teaching, seeking to define translation as a linguistic skill and/or competency in this context. It also seeks to gauge the acceptance of translating as a teaching component among language teachers. The concepts of skill and competency were researched, as were theoretical arguments supporting the use of translation and the mother tongue in language classes. The field research, of an ethnographic nature, was carried out at one of eight Inter-School Language Centers in the Federal District (Brazil). The mostly qualitative data were obtained by means of the following instruments: questionnaire, intervention, classroom observation, interviews and school documents. The results show that the teachers researched have a very superficial grasp of the grounded and flimsy notions of skill to be developed within the Common European Framework for Languages. Translation remains a much neglected pedagogical resource among language teachers.
