Within the last decades researches considering river basins not only as entities of spatial planning but at the same time as sensitive systems, at which human actions have deep impacts on the natural systems, for example the drainage systems, have increased. Within urban centres the natural and/or social systems are configured in a complex way being nonlinear and distant from the equilibrium. In contrast, the output of modifications which have arisen at the entrance of the system (input) follows an exponential form remaining unforeseeable because of the specific reactions of their constituting elements. Based upon this logic, the present study applies to an analysis of the basin of the Tejipià river considering the basin as a complex system focusing on social-spatial dynamics (components of anthropological and sociological connections) as well as on natural dynamics (hydrological questions). The aim of the study consists in the representative analysis of the social-ecological dimensions of the Tejipià river basin based upon the changes which have occurred inthe last 50 years. In that period of time the population of Recife has strongly increased and has therefore provoked an expansion of the urban area to rural areas and natural forests. At the same time low income classes have extended to the mangroves, the natural flood areas and the basins of affluents opening up more and more space of the Tejipià river basin. These settlements are most often badly constructed and therefore increase drainage problems. The basin of the Tejipià river covers an area of 93,2 square kilometres and is determined by different social, economical and cultural realities reflecting the mosaic of social diversity of Recife
