Sistema de Informações Baseado nas Características dos Poços de Abastecimento Público em Áreas Urbanas Litorâneas do Estado da Paraíba

RESUMO

The importance of groundwater in urban areas is virtuously growing during the last decades, in some regions these are the only source of water supply. In 2003, ten percent of all water distributed to João Pessoa city, in northeast Brazil, proceeded from wells operated by CAGEPA Companhia de Água e Esgotos da Paraíba, the government company which is responsible for the water distribution. The intensified and disordered water use, as well as the inadequate management, could lead to dangerous situations like land subsidence or aquifer salinization. The Brazilian law number 9.433/97 determines that the Water Resources Information System is one of the instruments of the nacional water resources management strategy. On this work, an Information System based on the characteristics of CAGEPA wells is developed. The Company divides the State in six areas, and the wells used on this research belong to one of them, the Litoral Branch. The aim of this work is to develop a georeferenced database of the wells and to contribute to the water resources management and to a better knowledge of the region water resources. The developed Information System, SIPOLI, is a useful tool to achieve these goals, despite the lack of wells with geographic coordinates. A campaign to fill the lack of data and to update the existing ones is recommended
