RESUMO

The overall objective of this research was to map the relations between work organization and the manifestation of psychosomatic symptoms The theoretical background was investigated, on the origin and dynamics of psychosomatics, psychosomatic symptoms and the relation between psychic load, psychosomatics and work organization. To achieve the proposed objective, the clinical-qualitative research method was used, and as a tool for data collection, in-depth interviews were carried out with fourteen individuals working at an organization, comprising a convenience sample. The interviews were literally transcribed, and an exploratory reading of the discourses was made, seeking to form a provisional categorization. A table was then created, highlighting the symptoms and the factors of work organization which emerged from the interviewees discourses, and showing the most frequently reported ones. The most frequent symptoms were headache, stress, physical fatigue, insomnia, gastritis, depression, anxiety, aches and pains in the body, inflammation of the sciatic nerve, anxiety, lethargy and mood swings. The most frequently reported factors arising from the work organization were pressure at work, insecurity, a feeling of being undervalued, lack of opportunity, lack of control and excess workload. It was therefore evident that the factors of the work organization are closely linked to the appearance of psychosomatic symptoms
