RESUMO
The present work had as objective the analysis of feelings expressed by mothers of Downs syndrome children, concerning some aspects of the maternal relationship with their children. Issues concerning pregnancy and nursing, maternal feelings and some psychic defenses on facing the syndrome, as well as the marital and family relationships reflected on mother and porter childs bond. The fact of having a Downs syndrome child can be distressing for the family and possibly more specifically for the mother, and its on this point, referring to the maternal feelings, that this research bases its purpose. In this study, participated four mothers of Downs syndrome children, aged between zero and five years-old. This research is based on clinic-qualitative method, seeking the psychodynamic comprehension of the maternal speeches in which concern these goals. The maternal feelings were observed through the mothers speeches in semi-directed interviews, which approached the perceptions, fantasies related to the pregnancy and to the nursing, the maternal feelings facing the revelation, the denoted feelings by these mothers about the Downs syndrome and also the reflexes in the family and marital relationships into the mother-porter child process. Concerning the related Downs syndrome feelings, this study realized that those dont permeated only what these mothers understand and actuated about maternity, but also the form as they realize their children and the characteristic syndromes difficulties associated whit them. The denial mechanism was the most used by these mothers in knowledge of the syndrome and this influenced their bond, since the first reaction (the shock) until the internal searching for resources to deal with the new situation. In front of the revelation, the medical explanation about the syndrome apparently had affected considerably the mothers emotional structure, because according to them, the non-structured manner which the news was given to them had turned impossible the initial health living with their babies. By the time which these mothers got in touch with their childrens difficulties and searched for information about the syndrome, it became possible undoing the negative fantasies present in the emotional content of these studied mothers, allowing a contact with the real and promoting the bond, as well as decreasing the rejection. Concerning the family relationships, it was realized over the interviewed mothers, that the family and the partner have important roll in helping the mother on defying the situation. The results showed that in the studied cases where the mothers had the partner and family supports, the searching for psychic conditions was less painful and distressing than the cases in which this didnt occurred.
