RESUMO

After the discovery of activated sludge system, several researchers made important contribution to improve systems not only in efficiency, but also in treatment capability per unit of system volume, besides they increase operational stability of the system. The objective of this work was to study methods of wastewater treatment in pressurized air lift reactor built in stainless steel with aeration pipes and downcomer of 1,2 and 1,5 m respectively. Reactor was feed with synthetic wastewater in concentrations that varied during seven experiments and sludge was separated in sedimentator at upper part for being recycled to the system. Reactor was carried out continuously until hydraulic stationary state and microbial growth were reached out each variation on substrate concentration. Manometric pressure in reactor was 1,25 kgf.cm-2, air fIow rate from 1300 (experiments 1,2,3 and 4) to 500mL.min-1(experiments 5, 6 and 7) and substrate flow rate about to 380 mL.h-1.The samples were analyzed by the methodology in analysis is described on "Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewater" (1995). Chemical Oxygen Oemand (COO), biomass concentration (Volatile Suspended Solids - VSS), nitrite, nitrate, total and ammoniacal nitrogen were analyzed. The COO concentration of the substrate varied initially from 2890 to 8700 mg COO.L-1and the reactor was operated with sludge concentration equal to obtained in conventional sludge sedimentator, using high COO concentration of a significant increase of biomass concentration on reactor about 10500 mg VSS.L-1 was observed. With this increase it was verified an increment in efficiency of COO removal about 99%
