RESUMO

The wastewater treatment process in activated sludge was carried out in an air-lift reactor with external loop using a synthetic wastewater with a chemical oxygen demand of 1040mgDQO.I-1 approximately. The purpouse of this work was to conduct an investigation about the air-lift reactor potential in wastewater treatment process. The suspended solids concentration chanded from 1200 to 3000mg. I-1. After adaptation of activated sludge in synthetic wastewater experiments were carried out in 1,5 liters air-lift reactor with external loop and nominal diameter of 1.5in. The reactor was operated in continuous form until steady¬ state conditions when the eficiency of process (η) and substrate removal rate constant (K) was determinated, with gas flow rate from 198 to 474ml.min-1 and hydraulic residence time from 3 to 7 hours. The oxigen transfer coefficient was determinated with sulfite solution ranged from 105.41 to 221.38 h-1 and gas hold-up ranged from 2.13 to 4.10 for gas flow rate used. Using a synthetic wastewater feed solution in air-lift reactor of 330ml.h-1 and chemical oxygen demand of 1040mgDQO.I-1, final chemical oxygen demand 150mgDQO. I-1 and final solids concentration of 400mg. I-1 were obtained. These results indicate the potential of the wastewater treatment process by activated sludge in air-lift reactor, with chemical oxygen demand removal rate of 85.6% although a sludge selection occurred during the experiments.
