ReconstituiÃÃo de uma fazenda colonial: estudo de caso â fazenda de SÃo Bento de Jaguaribe

RESUMO

Archaeological research occurred in Saint Bento de Jaguaribe Farm, an âBenedictineâ property of the XVII century made at the end of the XIX century, located at one of the first settlement nucleus of Pernambuco Captaincy, area of the ancient Sesmaria Jaguaribe, currently rural zone of Abreu e Lima City, on the northern coast of Pernambuco state, at a distance of 14Km of Recife City, willing to reconstruct the spatial organizational model on the rural properties of the farmâs kind, on the early days of the colonial period, and learn the specific social correlations. The data were collected through a field study, made by a team of specialists and graduate and post-graduate students of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Preceding the field study a documental research was made, with the objective of collect textual information, iconographic and cartographic, for the theoretical basement of the investigation. The study area was divided in seven (7) trenches; each one was subdivided in numeric squares of 4m2 and those in quadrants of 1m2. The squares were submitted to a process of pickling, to discover traces of architectural material and the evidences of human activity developed there. The archeological research evidenced that the social structure of that farm obeyed the same patterns of the sugar mills letting us to conclude that the specialties of the âBenedictine Farmâ reflects the same ideology that oriented the spatial organization of the sugar mills
