RESUMO

The major objective of this study was to investigate the most significant contributions made by organizational psychologists to the management of firm employees and workers. The design of the study favors the survey of traditionally offered contributions (real levei) and probable contributions that can be expected (ideal levei), considering the attributions of the organizational role of the psychologist in the improvement of certain life quality factors in the life of the employees. The product of the present study is meant to facilitate the understanding of the role of the organizational psychologist in the Quality of Working Life and is an attempt to suggest alternatives for the expansion of the role of this professional in terms of his/her actions inside a firm. The study consists of four parts: in the first, the theme and relevance of the study are justified. The second part includes the theorical foundation and presents important concepts about Organizational Psychology and Quality of Working Life, demonstrating the compatibility of the psychologist s attributions with programs for the improvement of working conditions and their effects on business productivity. The third part involves the methodology used for data collection from a sample of 113 psychologists. The results are then analysed statiscally mainly using parametric principies. The fourth part is devotes to the conclusions of the study, in which a profile of the psychologist is generated from the sample and the contributions of these professionals are listed in relation to each category proposed by the analytical model that directs the research (Walton, 1973). The final part of the study presents considerations about the results and suggestions for the expansion of the psychologist s role and the strengthening of his/her professional position in firms. Alternatives for further research are also presented.
