RESUMO

The study aims to analyze the Health Promotion actions concerning quality of life of workers at two state-owned hospitals in the city of Sao Paulo, from January 15 to March 30, 2008. It is a descriptive cohort case study, with qualitative and quantitative investigation of 233 workers. The instrument used in the qualitative stage was a questionnaire with open questions and, in the quantitative phase, the Portuguese version of SF-36, and its reliability was assessed by internal consistency through the Cronbach´s alpha. Most participants were female (73%), age range 30-50 years (49.8%), average schooling of complete high school (53.2%), married (45.5%), hired according to the statutory system (67.8%), had only one job entailment (75.5%), declared having never had any leave of absence (44.2%) or any type of occupational accident (88.4%). The following programs were identified in the survey: SEESMT, COMSAT, PPRA, PCMSO and others without enough records to enable analysis, which shows inefficiency of programs or specific actions that promote workers quality of life. As to understanding about Health Promotion in these programs, despite evident efforts made by the institutions to expand Worker Health, there is poor dissemination of information and little or no knowledge about the concept of Health Promotion; moreover, the programs are focused on diseases to meet the demands, and do not present any planning, monitoring or evaluation activities, thus requiring urgent changes. In this study, the SF-36 proved to be a reliable tool to assess the general health profile of workers, as demonstrated by the Cronbach´s alpha values above 0.7, indicating internal consistency among the instrument items, which was considered satisfactory. In the dimensions, the mean score amplitude ranged from 66.5 points (vitality) to 83.8 (physical functioning), for standardized scores in an 1-100 scale. By and large, the quality of life of the interviewees, presented scores that indicated a positive perception of this construct
