RESUMO

This thesis analyzes how elementary school teachers mediate writing to first grade elementary school children who are acquiring written language. This action takes place in classrooms, under different conditions which influence how learning activities are organized. Considering that subjects are socialIy and historicalIy constituted, different mediation procedures were viewed as a reflection of the teachers educational background. The analysis was based on data colIected through written and video records by observing two classrooms whose teachers had different educational backgrounds. Both teachers were attending, at the time of the data colIection, a study group coordinated by the investigator. The results point out two different mediating procedures. One of them can be described as folIows: the teacher is the one who promotes and authorizes alI possibilities of interaction between students and writing; language is conceived as a complete unit that is to be acquired by students who have a passive role in the acquisition process. The other procedure can be understood as a mediation where teacher does not control alI possibilities of students interaction to language, since this role can be atributed to other students or to writing material. In this procedure language is conceived as a body of knowledge that is constituted through interactions in which students have an active role in this process. These results motivated us to inquire about the causes that might explain these differences. One of these causes is related to the teachers educational background, although both teachers lack important linguistic concepts, especialIy those related to the relations between phonemes and letters. One conclusion of the thesis is that elementary school teacher training courses should include as part of their sylIabus the study of linguistics, both theoretical and applied.
