RESUMO

In recent years, a great environmental change in which companies are inserted can be observed. Society has turned more and more its attention to environmental questions. Companies, which were considered as economic institutions, are now seen as socio-political institutions. In this new approach, companies see reason in the need to change their institutional philosophy, so that they can be included in this new market. Aiming the improvement of their institutional image, several companies have begun to implement a Environmental Management System (EMS). However, the implementation of a EMS demands great investment and the return of this investment is not easily perceived. Thus, in this context rises a new instrument of EMS, Cleaner Production (CP), which aims at, not only the environmental benefits, but also the economic profits. In order to better study the advantages of the CP methodology, a case study was carried out at the polished ceramic industry CerÃmica Esmaltada Porto Rico, located in the municipality of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, State of Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil. This industry was chosen for its high polluting potential, for being located at an important river basin of Pernambucoâs state and for the interest shown by its managers in implementing the Cleaner Production procedures. Through a review of the literature, environmental aspects and impacts, change in technology and mass balance, use of questionnaires, it was possible to verify a decrease in the production costs, which shows the real advantages of applying the Cleaner Production methodology
