RESUMO

The present study has investigated translation processes in foreign-language composition. Using the case study approach, the research involved four participants, who wrote four compositions each, two in the foreign language (English) and two in the mother tongue (Brazilian Portuguese). As they wrote the compositions, the participants generated consecutive think-aloud protocols, which were recorded and then transcribed. The analysis of the transcriptions has yielded the identification of robust categories for the 4 participants: translation processes access to the semantic lexicon; translation processes access to the syntactic lexicon; composition processes; comparison between the first and the second compositions; influence of other foreign languages; and comments on think-aloud protocols. The study has concluded that less linguistically able individuals access the syntactic lexicon more often, manipulating meanings in their mother tongue down to the syntactic level, when they translate whole segments into the foreign language. More linguistically able individuals access the semantic lexicon more often, manipulating meanings directly in the foreign language. The study suggests that think-aloud protocols can be a productive teaching tool, since they enhance individual awareness of composition and translation processes, which may promote autonomy in relation to learning of a foreign language.
