RESUMO

Purpose: This study aimed on identifying the prevalence of sedentarism on the adult population of Firminópolis city, located in the state of Goiás, and the possible associations to other cardiovascular risk factors (tabagism, ethylism, arterial hypertension and obesity). Methods: A descriptive and cross sectional of population-based study with simple aleatory sample without replacement. 1170 individuals were included between 18 and 74 years old, living in the urban area. This study focused the analysis of the sedentarism as risk factor in this population. Variables were constituted: arterial hypertension, body mass index, age, genre, years of schooling, marital status, family income, physical activity habits, tabagism and ethylism. The sedentarism was analyzed in the work, in the displacement for the work and in the leisure time, being proposed an own scale starting from collected datas in the sample form, for analysis of the three moments of life at the same time. Results: It was identified prevalence of 67,7% of sedentarism in the work, being more prevalent in the female sex, in seniors and individuals with low schooling. It was just found association with the ethylism, among the studied cardiovascular risk factors. In the displacement for the work, it was identified prevalence of 78,6% of sedentarism, larger proportionally among women and seniors. There was also just association with the ethylism. The prevalence of sedentarism found leisure time was of 64,9%, larger proportionally among women and individuals of low schooling. Among the risk factors, there was association with tabagism, ethylism and nutritional status. For the scale proposal in this study, it was identified prevalence of sedentarism of 59,6%, being considered the three moments of life at the same time. The scale presented high specificity and high sensibility when compared to the isolated moments. Conclusion: Sedentarism is a serious problem of public health, being necessary to focus on the reduction of its prevalence to minimize the cardiovascular risk. Its control is linked to the control of other risk factors, reinforcing the need for intervention. It is necessary that new researches better elucidate the sedentary behaviors and its intervening factors, looking forward the construction of evaluation models that identify and even the sedentary individual.
