RESUMO

Adolescence obesity increases risk for non transmissible chronic illnesses at adulthood and demands research to program preventive actions. Aiming to determine overweight and obesity prevalence among scholar adolescents at Arcoverde city, from September to October 2006, 803 students had been evaluated, aging from 10 to 19 years old, registered in the education system, whose parents or responsibles agreed with their participation. Exclusion criteria were presence of: pregnancy, mental deficiency and unbalanced metabolic or genetic syndromes that intervened with weight or height. Sampling was randomized, stratified and proportional by age classes (10 to14 and 15 to 19 years old) and school type (public, private, rural and urban). Sample size was calculated for: 9,949 pupils population, 10% estimated prevalence, 2% precision and design effect equal to 1. Variables were: school type, age, sex, scholarship, occupation, Brazil economic class, BMI nutritional status and consumptio evaluation by alimentary weekly remainder. Overweight prevalence (10.1%) was bigger than obesity (2.7%). Weight excess, identified on 12.8% of adolescents, was significantly more frequent among females (14.7% against 10.8% to male; p=0.015) and private scholars (17.9% against 11.5% for public pupils; p=0.047). Adolescents aging from 10 to 14 years old, from rural schools and those classified as Brazil economic class A more frequently presented weight excess, but differences were not significant (13.1% against 12.4% for 15 to 19 years old and 14.7% against 12.6% for urban schools). Eutrophic, undernourished and weight excessive groups differed concerning to adequacy of energetic, constructor and regulator food intake. Eutrophics had energetics ideal intake and high intake of constructors and regulators; undernourished showed ideal intake of constructors, high for energetics and low for regulators, and those, weight excessive, presented low intake for constructors and ideal for energetics and regulators. One concluded that scholar adolescents at Arcoverde were more exposed to high obesity risk at adulthood.
