RESUMO

The Cerrado in the Mato Grosso do Sul state is devastated and the few remnants of native vegetation are only found in protected areas. In this way, becomes priority the study of the remnants of vegetation in the Cerrado, looking for its protection. This work objective was to identify different phytophysiognomic forms, based on the identification key proposed by RIBEIRO &WALTER (1998) and to establish a relationship with the spectral signatures of an IKONOS II high-resolution satellite image. And besides this to produce a Map of the Edge Index Evaluation of the arboreal fragments, detailing the used technique to establish a working routine with this kind of image and these processing techniques, making possible its utilization in other works. The study area is the region of the "Parque Natural Municipal Salto SucuriÃ" (the total area of the IKONOS image) in the city of Costa Rica - MS. The software used for the image processing were the Definiens Ecognition, to the object oriented classification and to the land cover map generation and PCI Geomatica for the construction of the GIS used in the fragmentation analysis, because these are software suitable to process 11 bits radiometric resolution images (2048 gray levels). It has been produced 11 boards linking the image spectral signatures and the land cover. The vegetation fragments were classified by the edge index and area. The study allows to advice that the "Parque Natural Municipal Salto SucuriÃ" must have expanded its protection area, covering all surrounding areas of permanent protection and to incorporate some close fragments, so that the representatives of the Cerrado diversity can be protected and so some important springs of the Cerrado and the neighboring areas.
