RESUMO

Smoking is a public health problem that persists as a leading cause of preventable deaths and occurs in almost all social segments. There are about 1,3 billion smokers in the world and 5 million annual deaths related to smoking. At the University of Brasilia this topic involved different categories of the university community. Objective: To know the dynamics of tobacco use in UnB and the perception of the university community regarding areas for smokers. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive and analytical study conducted at UnB in 2007. The sample was composed of 248 subjects: 124 smokers and 124 non-smokers. Was interviewed teachers, students, administrative technicians and service providers. The data were analyzed using the software Epi-Info. Results: Of the 124 smokers, 58,9% are men, 25,0% were between 21 to 25 years, 62,1% were unmarried and 52,4% lived in satellites cities of DF, 71,0% passed by semi-open environments and 12,1% had been in the building of the Rectory. About the use of cigarettes, 68,5% already smoked, 92,7% were using daily. The marks of high chemical levels are the most consumed (49,2%). The reasons for the beginning of smoke were: curiosity, influence of friends and parents, and will own. About restrict areas, 88,7% of smokers and 94,3% of non-smokers agreed with the existence. Conclusion: Smoking is a problem in UnB and involves different categories of smokers who use cigarettes with low levels until the most concentrated. There are not areas for smokers and smoking practice occurs in public places, contrary to the existing legislation. This fact can be considered a disrespect to the non-smokers in their legal rights to not breathe polluted air with cigarette smoke, and risk to the health of members of the university community.
