RESUMO

Despite the fact that Brazil possesses important marble and granite reserves of high quality and acceptance in the main consumer centres, its participation in the world market of ornamental stone is still weak, based mainly on the supply of raw material (blocks) of low added value. There are only a few companies that are in conditions to offer finished products that comply the standards demanded by the extemal market. Altering this situation is of great importance to the state of Espírito Santo, represented by the municipality of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, recognizably the biggest national processing centre of ornamental stones, with its approximately 600 companies linked to the sector, as well as possessing the biggest marble reserves in the country. The present work seeks to present the current situation of the ornamental stone sector in the aforementioned municipality, highlighting the main obstacles and setting out some indications for its consolidation and modemization
