RESUMO

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the environmental perception of different citizens of Toritama (PE), rural area of the State, relation to the Capibaribe River and the local environmental management. It comes with the premise that the industrial laundries activities (textile industry) of the municipal district, highlighting the jeans manufacturing, are changing the use of the land and causing environmental problems to the Capibaribe River, affecting the local population life quality. The research seek out to identify the different types of uses of Capibaribe river, in the area of Toritama, the interaction of the people with the river, and the perception of these (interviewees), about the government action, influencing the Capibaribe river quality. It was also analyzed the people encouragement in order to contribute, through some action, for the Capibaribe quality enhancement and the participation of the same ones, in way to notify environmental aggressions. The collection of data methodology was the identification of the environmental perception, through semi-structured interviews, based in Anny Whyteâs methodology. For the study, the theoretical explanation brings the important thematic approach to understand the environmental perception of the local people: environmental management, public and environmental politics, hydro resources and the local-area production. The Environmental Education is mentioned, in this study, as an instrument capable to propose new ways to understanding the relationship between human being and environment, raising the interest for the citizenship
