RESUMO

This paper is about the role changes between husband/ wife during the elderly age, focusing the alterations, which happen on the behavior of the housewives when their retired husbands return to their homes. Much has been said about being retired, from the new attitudes, from the difficulties, from the idleness as prize of a whole life of work. But there is still few reflections o the wivesâ role, especially from the housewives, those who had never worked out of their homes and that spent the most part of their lives surrounded by the domestic environment. Will they feel themselves being invaded by having to share a space that was supposed to be theirs only? How do they feel in relation to their husbandsâ return, sometimes feeling themselves depressed, with a low self-esteem and without identity? What changes have occurred on this new social relationship? The aim of this paper is to give voice to these women. We want to know their new role, their anxieties, speech, representations, their dreams and their point of view. What is changed and how do they behave with their husbandsâ return? Aiming to understand these changes on the womenâs behavior, it was privileged approaches from the feminist thought and it was studied the concept of the social role based on the Sociology and the theory of roles from J. L. Moreno. The methodology was done based on semi-structured interviews with old women from the middle urban class of the Federal District.
