RESUMO

The present thesis discusses â in the limits in between communication, politics and social culture â how and in what ways occur deep cultural changes in Pernambuco, specifically in the area named Zona da Mata, opening space to the constitution of a new world view and social conjuncture. Its objective is to show how those transformations are related to the process of decline of the sugar-cane economy as well as, in particular, the concept of equal genders introduced by the rural unionism. However, it s been observed this process doesn t happen without contradictions, limits and resistances, considering the history of submitting and dominating relationships established in the area â visibly marked by a patriarchal and machismo culture. Therefore, this study analyses the reception, by the male and female workers of the Zona da Mata area, of the speech of equality between genders transmitted by rural unionism , starting by themes such as sexual division of labor, sexuality, sexist violence, religion, among others. Attempting to interpret the construction of meanings by those subjects and understanding how they use the messages sent by the union, while they interact with several other sources of discussion (Church, politics parties, Nun Governmental Organisations etc) is undertaken. Simultaneously, this work tries to catch the degree of influence in the reception of cultural elements present in the social, political, economical context in which those workers are in, contributing to the composition of their world view and defining attitudes and behaviours. Observing in loco the practices of both female and male workers and analysing their statements, it is concluded that, between advances and retrogress, the speech of genders equality have been negotiated, adapted and incorporated by women and men of Zona da Mata, with possible modifications during the actual reality. It is evident, however, that it is necessary to go through a long trajectory to make those gender relations less unequal, bringing back the concept that changes on social relations always demands changes on power institutions. Besides, it is not always that women s conscience about their submission implicates immediate transformations, though it doesn t mean they are not in the process. Efforts are not in vain and their conquerors cannot be ignored
