RESUMO

Between 1630 and 1654, the Dutches conquered the North-East of Brazil and established the capital in Recife. From this city they improved their way of government as well as their culture. The aim of this dissertation is analyze the Dutch administration in Brazil from the beginning of 1630 until the first two years of Mauricio de Nassauâs government(1639/1640). In fact, in the first seven years of Dutch settlement in Brazil, it was difficult to âconquerorsâ to establish the peace and the commerce. However, the local Brazilian Portuguese armies did not impede Dutch to obtain profits (profijten) by getting to the rivers in small ships (jatches and chaloupen) and contacting with a few local inhabitants. On the other hand, although the relative peace that took place at the time ofMauricio de Nassau government, we can find many administrative problems involving Dutch and Brazilians that could be seen as constant in his government
