Participação do ensino de ecologia em uma educação ambiental voltada para a formação da cidadania : a situação das escolas de 2o. grau no municipio de Campinas

RESUMO

In order to assess if and how the teaching of Ecology at secondary school level is colaborating to the formation of "environmentally responsible citizens", we have gathered information about "citizenship" and "citizenship education", and have proceeded to a theoretical reflection about the concepts of Ecology that are needed to the comprehension of the "principles for sustainability" (and the colaboration that each subarea of Ecology can offer to that); we have also gathered information about the values, skills, attitudes and behaviour that are appropriate to the environmentally responsible citizen, and about the metodologies that can be used in the classroom to help shaping this environmental citizenship. Data were collected by directed observation (of Ecology classes in the classroom and outdoor environmental education activities) and from secondary sources (students, notebooks, reports, photos) at public and private schools in Campinas-SP. The Biology teachers conceptions about "citizenship" and ?environmental education", as well as their objectives while teaching Ecology and the obstacles that they face in everyday work were collected by sem-istructured interviews. By comparing these data to theoretical reflection, we have concluded that: there already is a tendency of incorporation of environmental issues in the teaching of Ecology at secondary level, but there are some problems in the way that ecological concepts and environmental issues are treated and there is a lack of adequate methodologies to foster values discussion and to help developing skills, attitudes and behaviour that are compatible with environmental citizenship
