RESUMO

This dissertation has as an objective to uncover under the constructionist approach, the significance attributed, in the vision of the members of the family and the workers to the death of the founder of a family business that operates in the printing and publishing sector, located in the southeast of Minas Gerais. The theory buildup involved the articulation of elements as organizational culture, the importance of the founder in the creation culture and construction of the myth of foundation and the significance of death, family business, as well as some reflections on social constructionism. Understanding the reality studied, use was made of triangulation of techniques of documentary analysis, in-depth interviews based on scripts and participative observation. It is a descriptive study of the qualitative nature that revealed the symbolic universe built around the death of the founder. In the analysis of the information, use was made of the method proposed by Spink: The analysis of discursive practices. The interpretation and comprehension of the significance built around the phenomenon studied, demanded the reconstruction of some aspects of the history of life of the founder and the organization. This way, through the use of analysis of discursive practices by the family members it was identified three interpretative repertories: repertory of absence, symbolic presence and that of managerial changes. In the vision of the workers it was built the repertories of constructing affection and a link to the myth of the founder, the absence and managerial changes. The death of the founder was understood by the organizational actors as the physical and symbolic absence of that odd and unsubstituted figure. The study shows also to how the organizational actors find means of keeping alive the work and principles of the founder, immortalizing the myth of foundation as a form of negating his biological death. The description and interpretation of the results of this study shows that the significance of the death of the founder are always socially built and historically located in a particular culture that keeps the memory and produces its own interpretations around the phenomenon death. Finally the interpretation of this social phenomenon will always come from human subjectivity, being those with sentiments an-cord in a set of organizational values and other cultural elements.
