RESUMO

Adolescence is an extremely important period for dentistry, as this is when many problems, such as dental caries, and periodontal and occlusal alterations, start to appear. Objective: The objective of this work was to determine the link between oral health, nutritional state and socioeconomic level, in adolescents aged between 15 and 19, enrolled in the Escola Técnica Federal in the town of Camboriú, SC, Brazil. Methodology: The level of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) was evaluated using an adaptation of the World Health Organization form. The nutritional state was defined by classification of the body mass index, expressed as percentages, and the socioeconomic level was determined using the ABA/ABIPEME questionnaire (1978). Results: The population studied consisted of 313 individuals aged between 15 and 19. Of these, 71% (n=222) were male and 29% (n=91) were female. All the adolescents evaluated presented characteristics of puberty. The average value for the DMFT index found was 6.51. In relation to nutritional state, normal weight was predominant (88%; n=277), followed by overweight/obesity (9%; n=28) and low weight (3; n=08). The majority of the adolescents belonged to classes C and D, making up 81% (n=253) of the study population. A significant link was found between oral conditions and socioeconomic level (p=0.001), however, this link was not observed between nutritional state and oral health. Conclusion: This study enabled a diagnosis of preventative and educational activities. It is suggested that more studies be carried out in this area, in an attempt to determine other risk factors for this population
