RESUMO

The main motivation to accomplish this paper was the idea of proffering a scientific contribution to the international business management area, in the sense to promote the construction of a research about the internalization of enterprises with a diachronic perspective, including the concern about the evolution of this phenomenon throughout the years. In this direction, the present paper aimed to analyze, considering the context, the internationalization process of a brazilian company that produces and exports. Portobello S/A was chosen as object of this case study. The methodology used in the research was qualitative, of describle character, being a simple study case, longitudinal. It was possible to identify, based on the Kraus model (2000), the internalization process stages of the enterprise, revealing that, despite less probable, the company skipped the first stage. Further was verified the contextual factors which motivated this stage switch, not only the internal, but also the external context, and yet the difficulties faced by the company in each one of the stages. This data revealed a strong interference of the government in the majority of the internalization process stages. It is suggested to outstretch the Kraus model, in the sense of contemplate the growth of commitment of international activities that refers to direct foreign investment.
