RESUMO

The empirical research here related has the objective of characterizing the profile (personal data, familiar, socioeconomic and cultural aspects, graduation trajectory and professional experience) of sixty (from an amount of 200) high school Portuguese language teachers who have been working at state financed public schools in the suburbs of the city of São Paulo under regional teaching directorship of South 1 from this capital, and their view about the subjects covered during the classes, in other words, their efforts to develop linguistic skills for the students from this segment of education. Data were collected under the analysis of official documents (specific legislation, curricular directives and national curricular parameters), academic documents (specific projects of teaching formation and capacity), and the sixty teachers statements in this research as well, which were spontaneous (direct approuch made in the classrooms, break time, courses, teaching directorship meetings and mutual pedagogical schedule meetings) and also induced (questionnaires specific produced and tested for this purpose). The research (objectives, conjectures, questions, collection procedures, data organization and analysis and the result presentation as well) was guided by the concepts of culture and educacional culture (Pérez Gomez), writing culture and lettering (Bechara, Brito, Soares, Geraldi, Possenti, Travaglia), teaching practice and curricula (Gimeno Sacristán), function, formation and profissional life cycle of teachers (Huberman, García, Hargreaves, Marin, Tardif). The results presented by the means of charts and tables, reveal that the teachers, subjects of this review, have similar personal and professional life trajectories, they know in a fragmentary way the documents which have supported the current reform in high school and they show understanding and perfoming difficulties of the Portuguese language teaching proposal at this final stage of basic education
