RESUMO

Images have always played a fundamental role in the representation of scientific knowledge. In Biology, the visualization of certain phenomena is essential for its comprehension and the increased use of images, whether in didactic books or in the act of teaching and learning is now observed. This research focused on a specific type of image: the scheme. Schemes are images that contain high amounts of information and are relatively complex, requiring the guidance of a teacher and the students predisposed knowledge of the matter its related to, or else jeopardizing the students proper understanding of the images. Having in mind the pedagogical role of schemes in the comprehension of the photosynthetic phenomenon, we try to bring up in evidence the students representation of this phenomenon, the way their representations entice the reading of the schemes that represent the photosynthesis and how the students interpret the symbolic and iconic elements used in schemes. We make use of concept maps to bring up in evidence and compare the knowledge pre and post scheme usage in the act of teaching and learning. The results of this study led us to the following conclusions: First of all, it was identified the use of a repertoire of concepts by the students on their explanations of the photosynthetic phenomenon: gaseous exchange, pigments, energy, glucose, organic matter, chlorophyll and light. However, considering the scientific concept, they dont establish a connection between these concepts that allows a coherent comprehension of the entire process. This could be related to the fact that students are submitted to an excess of information, which doesnt allow daily use of concepts learned, but a mechanical form of memorization. Secondly, the difficulty and discrepancy between the students while reading the schemes are related to the lack of knowledge regarding the information contained by the images and the representations of the phenomenon, reinforcing the need of the teachers support while reading the images. Finally, this research made clear for us that the usage of schemes allowed the organization of some concepts necessary for a correct comprehension of the photosynthetic process by the students
