RESUMO

The setting of the DiretÃrio Pombalino in Pernambuco, Brazil, also known as DiretÃrio dos Ãndios in the Portuguese-Brazilian Historiography is analysed in our research. The law, promulgated in 1757 to be applied to the social and historical reality of the GrÃo-Parà and MaranhÃo, was spread to the rest of the country in 1758. This DiretÃrio was created and established at a time when Portugal was facing serious economical and political problems. After Dom JoÃo V died and Dom Josà I ascended to the throne, a series of reforming measures were taken by minister SebastiÃo Josà de Carvalho e Melo. The purpose of these measures had to do with the intended new rising of Portugal and a greater centralization of power, and the control of the overseas possessions as well. The DiretÃrio Pombalino was considered and established as part of this reforming context. The ruling of the regular priests over the indians in the missions was extinguished, villages and civil places were built, and the life of the indians was organized in accordance with the Portuguese way of life, in view of their insertion into the market of goods for exportation. Despite the general characteristics, we have realized that Pombalâs laws have to be studied based on the historical realities of the areas where they were applied. In our point of view, the social and historical realities of a certain group of people influence the application of a body of laws. It was so during the existence of the DiretÃrio. Our option for Pernambuco â which encompassed the administration of the Rio Grande do Norte, Cearà and ParaÃba in the 18th century â happened on account of the inexistence of documents about that topic, which might focus especially the applicability of the DiretÃrio dos Ãndios in Pernambuco, which was part of the international manufacturer market, sugar having been its main product for exportation until mid 19th century
