RESUMO
This research aims to investigate a probable process of grammaticalization in the Portuguese spoken in Brazil. We will focus the scale of change develloped by lexical item achar, full verb, that in determined contexts assumes the function, more grammatical, of a epistemic modal element. We use as theoretical base studies on the grammaticalization, mainly of Lehmann (1982), Heine, Claudi &Hünnemeyer (1991), Hopper (1991) and Hopper &Traugott (1993). In the treatment with the modality we combine the proposal of Palmer (1986) with points of the functionalism of Hengeveld (1988, 1989) and with the studies on the modals in the Portuguese of Brazil from Neves (1996) and Castilho &Castilho (1996). To verify the process of change developed forthe form achar, we analyze data of the contemporary Portuguese - written and spoken - and historical Portuguese - written language. It was done, initially, a qualitative analysis, to each one of the types of achar in the corpus of spoken language. A quantitative analysis was also used to compare data from spoken and written Portuguese to gain greater credibility to the results of our inicial analysis. With the inquiry of the diacronic data, we look for the initial date of use of each type of achar in the linguistic sistem. Finally, we submit these items to the general principIes of grammaticalization proposed by Hopper (1991) and Lehmann (1982).
