RESUMO

The linguistic facts of agramatism, a type of aphasia that is different from the others because of its syntactic nature, have aroused interest among linguists. The researches, counting on scarce observations and limited experiments, attempt to describe the grammatical features of pathological conditions in different languages, analysing individual cases or groups of patients. The aim of this thesis is to present and analyze a case of agrammatism in Portuguese, through the longitudinal study of "case P". Generative grammar, proposed by CHOMSKY, from the 80 s on, has provided the theoretical foundation for data analysis. Relevant studies of similar phenomena in other languages have been taken into account, not with the purpose of producing a comparative study, but mainly as a confirmation of hypothesis about the specific case. The longitudinal approach made it possible to detect some linguistic progresses in the patient, who advanced from a severe case of grammatical loss to a moderate one. These degrees of severity could be established when the syntactic impairments of P s agramatism, despites the instabilities of this pathological case, were related to the hierarchy of functional categories, according to FRIEDMANN and GRODZINSKY (1995). The main aspects of each syntactic structure focused here, as well as the presentation of interview episodes and non-traditional tests - through which the peculiar syntax of pathological language coud be observed - may be of some help for correct diagnosis of similar cases. The specific facts of agrammatism in Portuguese may indicate new directions for future studies. It may also be a contribution, even in translinguistic
