RESUMO

The eucalypt culture in Brazil has a huge economical, environmental and social importance. In highly weathered soils of tropical regions, the maintenance of adequate flows of water and nutrients is fundamental to sustain yields and, therefore, the competitiveness of the forest sector in the international market. Evaluating and understanding how the water and nutrient resources regulate forest productivity not only contributes to predict the yield potential of stands, but also help in the adoption of management practices more adequate to the forest growth. Thus, the objectives of the present research were: to evaluate the influence of plant age, sampling time and the management of water and nutrients on the foliar nutrient concentration and their ratios in young clonal stands of Eucalyptus; to evaluate the influence of increased availability of water and nutrients on growth, nutrient acquisition and nutritional efficiency of eucalypt and parameterize the process-based model 3-PG to stands of eucalypt in the Central-Western region of Minas Gerais State. It was concluded that: a) the foliar nutrient concentration and their ratios are sensitive to the age of the stands, to the time of sampling, and to the management of water and nutrients, which are factors that affect the diagnose of the nutritional status of young stands of eucalypt; b) the increase in water and nutrient availability, via fertirrigation, promotes greater leaf area index, greater biomass production and nutrient accumulation. Their gains are variable with the age and nutrient, and have effects on nutrient utilization efficiency; c) the increase of only water availability, via irrigation, does not increase the leaf area index, but does increase the leaf specific area, besides enhancing growth and biomass accumulation up to the age of two years. It also increases P acquisition; d) the increase of water availability reduces the wood density; e) the maintenance of high growth rates requires adequate nutrient supply, even under conditions of high water availability; f) it was parameterized the processbased model 3-PG to stands of eucalypt in the Central-Western region of Minas Gerais; g) the model parameterization at regional scale leads to more accurate estimates of productivity of eucalypt stands; h) the 3-PG model when adequately parameterized presents good performance regarding the estimated productivity of eucalypt stands in a regional scale. However, it needs further refinements in order to be used at local level, such as at stand level. After such adjustments it may prove and effective tool for helping forest management in a precision silviculture scenario.
