RESUMO

The purpose of this research is to identify the necessary qualities for Family Health promotion and education, from the perspective of professors and students of a school of higher education in Curitiba. This research is based on the four pillars of education in the 21st century, described in UNESCOs report, also known as the Delors report. Eight group debate sessions were held and analysed using the Focal Group technique. As a result of thorough debates and interaction with the group, four categories emerged, each one related to one of the pillars described in UNESCOs report. The categories were: 1) The use of knowledge as a tool for comprehension; 2) The use of communication to transform ideas into reality; 3) The influence of ethics and responsibility in a persons character to promote harmony and universality; 4) Learning how to work together as a team. The first category illustrated the importance of ample knowledge in Politics, Religion, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, and Ethics. The second emphasized how aspects of interpersonal relationship are fundamental in the promotion and education of Family Health. The third illustrated how ethics and responsibility are linked to knowledge and humanization. The fourth revealed the close relationship between the different pillars. The Focal Group technique contributed to the analysis of the topics above. The discussions which were held allowed the necessary qualities for Family Health promotion and education to be identified. This new reality requires that heath practitioners adopt a multi-professional and interdisciplinary view in relation to this subject.
