RESUMO

The role of the nurse throughout the history of mankind has passed through distinct phases, and is currently centered on a model which is different from the biologicist model that prevailed for the greater part of its history. Following the Health Reforms, and the consolidation of the Brazilian national health system - the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) - the profession began to be viewed according to an educative model, aimed at promoting and maintaining a state of health and life. These changes have called for qualified nursing professionals and the development of new skills. And this new concept, in the context of sanitation, requires changes in nurses training, forcing schools of nursing to rethink their curricular and teaching practices, promoting the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes which are in line with this new professional perspective, geared towards health promotion and education. One of the most recent strategies adopted by the Ministry of Health for consolidating the SUS is the Programa Saúde Família (Family Health Program) (PSF), which has been revolutionizing the job market in the area of health. Based on this new reality, this study sought to identify the nursing skills required for promotion and education in family health, outlining the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for professional practice in this new market. This study is characterized as descriptive field research. It uses a method first created at the University of North Carolina and introduced to Brazil by Spínola and Pereira in 1976, which is implemented in distinct stages, resulting in the construction of an organizational chart known as a Tree Diagram. In this study, the diagram was designed based on the views of three key professionals in the area of promotion and education in family health, with each of the experts establishing categories which were broken down and hierarchized into what were considered to be 82 fundamental components for the development of nursing skills. Next, the jury method was used, selecting as judges, five nurses with broad knowledge in the area, who validated the study by evaluating 97.56% of the components of the diagram as very important. Subsequently, 31 teachers from the nursing program of UNIVALI assessed each component of the diagram, presenting a performance index of 9.53, which corresponded to the range of success, according to the conversion scale used, revealing that the skills presented in the study identify the essential nursing knowledge, skills and attitudes for promotion and education in family health. This research could help to delineate a professional training that is capable of meeting the requirements for skilled human resources, for the consolidation of the SUS.
