RESUMO

This dissertation seeks the spectacularity of the ?Combat between the Christians and Moors?, an annual ?jest? which occurs in the streets of Prado, a city located in the extreme south of the state of Bahia, Brazil. This folkloric event is a staged battle between the Moors (dressed in red) and the Christians (dressed in blue). It consists in the hostile dialogue and sword fights between the two opposing sides. That celebration pays homage to Saint Sebastian and that dispute happens for the possession of his image, in form of sculpture. The description and analysis of those spectacular aspects of this event ? the actors? performance, the text, the music, the props and the costumes ? they found the proper theoretical support on the Ethnoscenology, which is the discipline which consists to study human spectacularity and its organized behavior. From an ethnographic perspective, the research was based on data gathered through field observation and from interviews collected over an extended period of the researcher. As the research developed, it was possible to identify the relationship between the ?jest? from Prado with its Iberian cultural roots. Nevertheless, though certain characteristics and principles of the jest are reproduced and represent their Moorish sources from countries such as Spain and Portugal, certain local indigenous characteristics are also evident. Though they are not explicit in the presentation of the event, these characteristics are evident through the interviews with those involved. The analysis of the spectacular aspects put in evidence the intercommunication between which is the spectacularity itself and the varied contextual aspects from its local way of expression. As a result of this study, there is now a collection of images (photographic and video) and text (dissertation).
