RESUMO

This study investigated the relation between motivation and English language learning in the high school, in the Brazilian private teaching context. The methodology applied in the development of the study was based on a qualitative-interpretative approach. After the data analysis, it became evident that motivation is considered relevant for students and their close relatives, participants of the study, only in the external environment of the classroom. The motivation presented in the researched school context is limited to the demanding of each subject and focus on the school objectives. The initial classification of motivated students became totally deprived of its characteristics due to the situations experienced in that context
