RESUMO

Seasonal drought periods, associated with highly impaired water quality levels, led the Pernambuco State Government to impose drastic reductions in Recife Metropolitan Area (RMR) water supply. Recently, construction of Pirapama River Dam is intended to solve part of the current lack of regular water supply to RMR. This study utilises a longitudinal, one-dimensional approach to examine alterations on hydrodynamics and water quality features in a region of Low Pirapama River comprised between the dam and the estuary after filling and formation phases of the reservoir lake. Physical and biogeochemical, in situ-obtained data were utilised to calibrate and validate numerical models DYNHYD5 and EUTRO5. Once these stages were completed, models were utilised to examine several scenarios by considering hydrological (dry and rainy seasons), oceanic (spring and neap tidal periods) and operational variables (concerning water released from the upstream reservoir pool by using spillways or bottom outlets). Hydrodynamical results showed that there are several places where river depth is too shallow â which interferes in river natural flow and concentrates pollutant loads. Moreover, a considerable increase of oceanic intrusion flows at the lowest portions of the estuary was noticed â which can affect dramatically ecosystem equilibrium. It was also observed that hydrodynamical and water quality conditions are systematically worst in dry season than in rainy season. When considering quality of water released by hydraulic structures from the dam, it was evidenced that utilisation of bottom outlets is the most critical condition to the near-dam portions of this system, by deteriorating water quality significantly between Pirapama River Dam and Cabo de Santo Agostinho Municipality. It was also observed that the major effluent-load releasing points tend to impair water quality seriously downstream and at the adjacent estuarine region
