RESUMO

The adolescence is a transitional period that occurs between childhood and adulthood which multifaceted nature cannot be measured, at the same time, by any definition alone. According to the World Health Organization, it is âan evolutionary stage characterized by a rapid biological (i.e. pubertal), social and psychological development, which occurs in between 10 and 19 years of age". Given these complex and delicate characteristics, one of the issues that have most concerned public health authorities, particularly in underdeveloped countries, is the adolescent pregnancy. This study aims and scope sought to fit in this context by carrying out a research in the maternity of the Santa Casa de MisericÃrdia located in the city of Campo Belo. A survey was applied to all women who gave birth at this maternity from 2000 to 2006. The survey questions were designed in order to investigate which factors -- such as, for instance, the level of schooling, income, birth control methods --; most contribute to the adolescent pregnancy. The statistical technique used was the Survival analysis. The data were analyzed through non-parametric and semi-parametric tests (Cox proportional hazards model, stratified, and time is the response variable) and through parametric statistical models. The conclusion confirmed other research findings on all factors already reported which contribute most to the adolescent pregnancy.
