RESUMO

A series of workshops with patients in the Hospital de Custódia e Tratamento Psiquiátrico de Florianópolis (Santa Catarina, Brazil), inspired research on intensive geographies. The workshops first planned to investigate geographic thinking and spacial mapping of the patients, using map production, soon led to several other graphic productions. At first, these productions seemed only statistical noise, but as their images began to reappear, they turned into the center of the research. These marginal products were significant in the way that they troubled the connection between prison and its medicalization, and in the process, developed the heuristic of the "intensive map." This notion depends upon the concept of "intensive" developed by Deleuze and Guatarri, along with idea of the forthcoming, lines of flight, and deterritorialization (the last concept also emerging from Foucault s studies on prisons and madness). The workshops became, as such, an educational strategy for those interested in the cartography of contingency and the processes out of which intensive maps emerge. In this way, the idea of intensive geography became consistent.
