RESUMO

We have studied configurations that increase the semiconductor laser light coupling efficiency into multimode fibers. We have tested lenses and a fiber termination named "Roof Top" (RT), obtained by a polishing technique. Although the efficiency values are greater than that obtained by the butt-coupling, one observes that the alignment tolerances become more critical. When coupled to a long fiber (~1 km) , the RT-ended fiber, correctly aligned with the laser stripe, has a strong selective mode excitation, reducing, by a factor of 2, the width of the exit pulse from the long fiber, that is, its total dispersion
